Introduction

The FCC Broadband Label project aimed to create a clear, user-friendly label to help consumers understand broadband service offerings. By providing essential information in a straightforward format, the label ensures that users can make informed decisions about their internet services. This project highlights the importance of transparency and accessibility in communication design, showcasing our ability to translate complex data into easily digestible formats for everyday users.

The FCC, an independent U.S. government agency, requires clear, easy-to-understand, and accurate information about the cost and performance of high-speed internet services. They suggest a templatized label inspired by common nutrition labels.

As an enterprise, we proposed a toolkit of patterns that meet the FCC requirements while upholding experience standards across 9 different brands under the Verizon umbrella: Total by Verizon, Walmart Family Mobile, Straight Talk, Tracfone, Simple Mobile, Safelink Wireless, Net10 Wireless, Page Plus, and GoSmart Mobile.

Research and Analysis

We began by conducting thorough research to understand the FCC’s requirements and the needs of broadband consumers. This included studying existing nutrition labels as inspiration for the design.

User-Centered Design

Our process focused on user-centered design principles. With the assistance of the research team, we conducted user interviews and usability testing to gather insights and validate design choices, ensuring the labels were intuitive and informative.

Pattern Toolkit Development

We developed a comprehensive toolkit of patterns to maintain consistency across all 9 brands under the Verizon Prepaid umbrella. This toolkit included design templates, guidelines, and components that met FCC requirements while preserving each brand’s identity.

Iterative Design and Feedback

The design process was iterative, involving multiple rounds of feedback from stakeholders and end-users. This iterative approach allowed us to refine the labels to ensure clarity, accuracy, and ease of use.

Collaboration and Integration

Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including marketing, legal, and technical departments, was crucial. This ensured that all aspects of the labels were compliant with regulations and aligned with business objectives.

Implementation

We provided detailed documentation and training sessions to ensure smooth implementation across all brands. This included instructions on how to customize the labels for specific brand needs while adhering to the overall design standards.

This comprehensive approach ensured that the final broadband labels were not only compliant with FCC requirements but also enhanced the user experience by providing clear, actionable information in a familiar format.

Challenges

  • Designing a templated frame suitable for all brands.
  • Identifying and integrating the label into key pages and flows.
  • Specifying optimal label placements for clarity and accessibility
